Rosacea is a skin condition that affects over 16 million Americans in the U.S. "It's a chronic state of inflammation, which subsequently leads to facial redness, capillaries, acne-like bumps, and coarse skin texture," Elizabeth Tanzi, MD, the founder and director of Capital Laser & Skin Care, told Byrdie. With rosacea, it's important to control stressors to avoid triggering flare-ups. Besides using gentle skincare products for sensitive skin, new research shows that something as simple as enjoying a comforting cup of coffee will keep your rosacea at bay. Who knew that life's simple pleasures, like a cup of coffee, could also be such a powerful skin savior?

Scientists involved withВ JAMA DermatologyВ conducted a health study withВ 82,737 female participants, keeping a close eye on their coffee consumption and other caffeine boosters-like tea, soda, and chocolate-over a 14-year span. The analysis found that the women who drank four or more cups of coffee per day had the lowest risk of rosacea compared to those who only drank one cup of coffee each month. Essentially, the study implies that if you're an avid coffee drinker, you're 23% less likely to develop rosacea. Consuming caffeineВ via chocolate, tea,В or soda did not have the same results.

The Sun reports that experts from Warren Alpert Medical School at Brown University find this to be true because caffeine constricts blood vessels, which reduces redness and inflammation associated with rosacea. Although this study focused on the risk of developing rosacea, it could also help those who are already dealing with the condition. According to The New York Times, Wen-Qing Li, an assistant professor of dermatology at Brown University, says this could aid in calming rosacea over time. "We would positively anticipate that caffeine intake and caffeinated coffee consumption may be beneficial for lessening rosacea severity as well,” Li told The Times. “But this would require further clinical investigation.”
